Reinhard Merkel is a German philosopher and legal scholar who was born on 17 April 1950 in Tübingen, Germany. He studied law at the universities of Tübingen, Freiburg, and Harvard, before earning a doctorate in law and a habilitation in philosophy from the University of Freiburg.
Merkel has written extensively on topics such as bioethics, criminal law, and legal philosophy, and is known for his contributions to the ethical and legal debates surrounding topics like euthanasia, genetic engineering, and assisted reproduction.
Merkel’s work has been translated into several languages, and he has won numerous awards and honors for his contributions to philosophy, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2013.
Currently, Merkel serves as a professor of criminal law, criminal procedure, philosophy of law and legal theory at the University of Hamburg.
